"Loving the Ugly Duckling" 36" x
36" Oils on canvas
A photo I took in Central Park NY in the summer
of 2011 of the statue of Hans
Christian Ardensen, author, poet,
dramaturg born in Denmark in 1805.
As I was ready to take the photo and this girl came running and
sat on his book as
I saw her on the camera's view finder, ( I
thought to my self: what? ), and pushed
the button of the shutter!
It amazed me to see her pose... (as if she had practiced it many
times), later I
thought may be she loves drama.
In 1977 I visited his home museum in Scandinavia and bought a
poster of the ugly
duckilg which hung on my wall many years.
Love his books since I was a child,
mom bought those little books
for us, I love the ugly duckling since then.
I could not talk to the girl who poses here because I was on
my way to the hotel
after a long day visit of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. When I checked my
photos of my time in NY in 2011
and saw this photo, I thought: "I'll paint it some
day".
I think the girl also loves the "Ugly Duckling". Completed
this painting this
week, I started it in April of last year.
I was in NY taking a painting workshop
at the Grand Central Academy of Arts in
Manhattan that summer.
